Europas hav
Astronomers using data from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have identified carbon dioxide in a specific region on the icy surface of Europa. Analysis indicates that this carbon likely originated in the subsurface ocean and was not delivered by meteorites or other external sources. Moreover, it was deposited on a geologically recent timescale.

Now, a couple of studies using observations by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) suggest that the carbon dioxide on Europa's surface came from the ocean hidden underneath its icy shell. Further, the researchers have come to the conclusion that it's pretty recent in origin — geologically speaking, at least.

Carbon dioxide seems to be seeping up to Europa’s icy surface. It is most abundant in an area called Tara Regio, where the ground is jumbled in what’s called chaos terrain – a mess of pits.

The high levels of CO 2 were found on Europa in a region known as Tara Regio, which is a young region of resurfaced "chaos terrain" that's caused by some sort of disturbance involving "an exchange of material" between the ocean and frozen surface, NASA explained. "Previous observations from the Hubble Space Telescope show evidence for ocean.

The Short Answer: What is Europa? Europa is one of Jupiter’s moons. Scientists believe that Europa is especially notable because it may have twice as much water as Earth, though it is so cold on Europa that water on the surface of this moon is frozen.
